Communication and culture review on red riding hood and the huntsman

Basic film notes à

It is an American produced film

12 rating

Director is Hardwick, the same woman who directed twilight

It is an adaptation of the original red riding hood fairy tale

Opening of the film à

It is set in the middle of nowhere

The opening is a repertoire of the introduction to all film sets

In the establishing shot, we see the whole location of where the film is set by using a bird’s eye view

There is scary/tense music to help to set the scene

We hear a voice over which is meant to be little red riding hoods voice, over the top of a flash back scene from when she was a little girl

Continuing with the film à

It is a hybrid movie: a love story, fairy story and horror

The film gives us cues about how we are meant to feel about the characters through the use of music, when we first meet specific characters.

The line ‘I’d do anything to be with you’ suggest to young girls that they should do whatever it take to be with a boy no matter what it is. What sort of ideology is this to teach children?

In the fairy stories men and women are ALWAYS separate or not present at all and this film changes this slightly but mainly stays with this ideology.

The granny in the film lives miles away on the outskirts of the forest. Showing that the granny is an outsider which we are meant to be cautious of trusting.

Little red riding hoods cloak was being made for her wedding day, which symbolises the loss of innocence.

We see a little bit of the ‘scary monster’ throughout the film, helping the audience to stay engaged as they feel like they have to find out who/what the monster is

Fairy tales are never religious however this film has entwined the fairy tale with religious views.

During the film the villagers start to become suspicious of each other, they become especially suspicious of red riding hood because she is wearing the colour red and no one else does causing her to also become an outsider.

This film helps to bring home the fact that dangers can be inside of the home/neighbourhood rather than strangers you meet.

The metanarratives in the film are science and religion.

The film is trying to suggest that you can’t trust anybody but yourself, due to red riding hoods best friend even selling her out to the werewolf hunter.

The coder of the film is extremely controversialà

Female domesticity

The child is right and the parents are wrong

Females should always wait for the male if he leaves them

The bad boy is the only one to trust
